Minister's Welcome

Dear Reader, As minister of Shirley Methodist Church, I am delighted to write a few words of welcome to the Church via this Website. In 2003 Shirley Methodist Church celebrated 100 years of witness in the community. However, the present suite of premises are very much more recent, with an almost complete rebuilding programme having taken place some ten years ago. This has enabled the congregation to meet more comfortably in worship, and also for the Church community to take seriously its place in the town centre of Shirley with the opening of The Octagon Coffee Shop, which is open six days a week, the provision of two Day Centres for the elderly, enabling a Playgroup to meet on the premises, as well as Toddler Groups. An active Church with approaching 370 members and 1000 or so on the Community Roll, Shirley Methodist Church seeks to serve the community, but does so from believing that all its activities come from worship, which is the central activity of the Church. So, as well as the worship on Sundays, we start each day with Morning Prayers at 9.15 a.m., and each Friday we hold a Shoppers Service at 10.15 a.m., to which about 100 people come. There are regular Bible Study Groups and House Groups, and midday Communion each Wednesday. More information about these, and the other activities offered in the Church, will be found by following the links on this page. Suffice it for me to say that it is a huge privilege being minister at a Church that is committed to seeking what it means to serve Christ in the community in which it is placed, and we warmly welcome all who would seek to enable that mission to continue and develop, or who simply want to come and be refreshed, restored and renewed.
